The Science Behind SuperTeeth
- Streptococcus salivarius M18
- Lactobacillus reuteri
- Lactobacillus paracasei
All three of these bacteria strains work in a variety of ways to create a healthy and balanced oral microbiome. Just by colonizing in the mouth, these good bacteria are able to reduce the number of bad bacteria, called Streptococcus mutans, by simply crowding them out. They also possess characteristics that inhibit the growth of these same bad bacteria as well, but one strain that stands out among them is Streptococcus salivarius M18.
Streptococcus salivarius M18 (S. salivarius M18) is a unique bacteria strain that is derived from the human mouth and has many inherent properties that help keep our teeth and gums healthy and our oral microbiomes in balance. While everyone has Streptococcus salivarius bacteria in their mouths, only a very small population of people have the specific S. salivarius M18 strain which is what makes it so unique and interesting. Here are two very important functions that S. salivarius M18 has:
1. The first important property of S. salivarius M18 is its ability to produce four potent antimicrobial proteins. One of these antimicrobial proteins is called salivaricin M and it has the ability to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, which are the main bacteria that can cause cavities and other oral diseases.
2. S. salivarius M18 also produces two enzymes called dextranase and urease. Dextranase reduces plaque accumulation on your teeth by breaking down dextran, which is a large component of plaque. Urease interacts with the urea in your saliva to help neutralize the acidic pH level of your mouth caused by acid from Streptococcus mutans or acidic foods and drinks. Streptococcus mutans thrive and grow in acidic environments so this helps reduce the risk of cavities forming.
Since sufficient levels of all three of these bacteria strains do not occur naturally in everyone’s mouths, it is important to supplement your oral flora with a dental probiotic that contains these key strains. Studies have also shown that continual use of a dental probiotic is necessary in order to maintain the colonization of these good bacteria in your mouth. Achieving proper levels of good bacteria will help keep your mouth functioning at an optimal level and will help keep cavities and other oral diseases in check.
